Deadly Blast Outside Islamabad District Court Kills at Least 12, Injures Dozens — Authorities Launch Urgent Investigation

In Pakistan, a massive explosion hit a crowded judicial compound in the country capital Islamabad killing dozens of people and injuring many more in what the government is investigating. On 11 November 2025 on Tuesday an explosion shook the entrance of the district court, in G-11 area of Islamabad.

The Islamabad police indicated that the incident happened along the main gate of the court when a vehicle, depending on various reports, parked outside the complex, exploded or was blown up. Part of local media gives an insinuation that a gas cylinder that was in the vehicle could have been the cause of the explosion. Islamabad Police officials claim that a forensic team was sent to investigate the nature of the blast.

The explosion occurred at the time of court hours where the entrance is usually crowded with litigants, lawyers and court staff. The local media of Islamabad reported that the noise could be heard up to six kilometers distant.

By different Pakistan media, state-run organizations, at least 12 died and over 20 wounded in Islamabad blast. Initial reports provided lesser or different figures – e.g., at least eight injured. Among those killed and injured are said to be lawyers, people waiting and court visitors. Cars outside the gate were also seriously damaged or burnt in Islamabad blast.

Lawyer Rustam Malik who witnessed it told: It was utter pandemonium, people and lawyers were running across the complex. I could see two dead men lying on the gate and some cars burning in Islamabad.

One of the senior Islamabad police officials commented

t was some sort of a blast we are investigating. It is not clear yet. Our forensic team will be able to report more after which we will be in a position to give more details. The area has already been cordoned off, ambulance and other emergency services such as rescue 1122 teams are on the ground and the injured have been rushed to the nearest hospital, the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS).

The sector and areas around it have increased security efforts and inquiries are going on whether the blast was an accident (e.g. a gas cylinder explosion) or was a deliberate act (e.g. a terrorist act). Up to now, there has been no group that has taken responsibility.

The attack is made at a time when the security level in Pakistan is at a high risk and in the past, there have been militant groups that have used their strikes in the major cities in Pakistan to cause death. The incidence that the explosion took place in a judicial complex, a high profile, a symbolic site, renders the incident particularly disturbing to the masses and the authorities.

In the same incident, the Pakistani security forces stopped a planned attack on a cadet college in the North-western province of Wana where militants were trying to seize hostages. This highlights the multi-front security issues that the nation still experiences.

In a very stern reply, political as well as security leadership have come out to condemn the incident and vowed to conduct investigations and hold persons concerned accountable. Although nothing official was reported in the earliest summary sources, it is normal that Pakistani authorities promise to take immediate steps in such situations. The non-immediate accountability case implies an unintentional cause or a proven but still uncertain militant role.

Associations of lawyers and even court employees are stunned because courts are generally regarded as secure areas and every daily business was abruptly stopped with panic breaking out among visitors. There was a bang heard by the witnesses, a great deal of smoke, and people rushing to safety.
